Our Green Schools' Committee

At Ballyheada National School, we are delighted to be part of the Green Schools initiative, which inspires our pupils and school community to care for the environment and embrace sustainability. Our Green Schools' Committee is a passionate group of pupils and staff who are committed to making a positive difference for our planet.
We are proud to have already earned two Green Schools' flags for Litter and Waste and Energy. This year, we are turning our focus to the theme of Water as part of an exciting two-year program. Our goal is to raise awareness about the importance of water conservation, promote sustainable water use and encourage everyone to take steps to protect this precious resource.
Our committee members play an active role in driving initiatives, organising activities, and encouraging everyone in our school to take small but meaningful steps to save water. Together, we are working to ensure that Ballyheada NS continues to make progress towards a greener, more sustainable future.
Keep an eye on our updates to see what exciting projects and achievements our Green Schools' Committee will accomplish this year!

Our School Wormery!
Our Green-Schools Committee has set up a fantastic new wormery! With the help of 3rd to 6th class, we gathered lots of leaves to get it started. We soaked the leaves and some brown cardboard in water before adding them to the wormery.
Our special Tiger worms need a damp home because their skin can dry out if it gets too dry. They don’t have any teeth, so the food they eat has to be nice and soggy! The worms will enjoy food waste from the staff room, and in return, they will help us make wonderful compost for our school courtyard.
We can’t wait to see the results of their hard work!
'Water is Life' Poster Competition
Pupils from 1st to 6th class recently participated in the national "Water is Life" poster competition, organised by Green-Schools. This initiative encouraged individual pupils to design an A3 poster illustrating the theme "Water is Life," highlighting the essential role of water in sustaining all forms of life.
The creativity and artistic skills demonstrated by our pupils were truly impressive. Three winners were chosen from each class and these entries were sent to be judged on a national level. We will announce the winners shortly. Well done to all our pupils who took part in this competition.
